AUSTRIA (week one)

I arrived in Vienna on August 9th and was immediately taken with the architecture. The streets are lined with alternating pristine heritage buildings and bold modern and contemporary architecture. An evident culture of architecture, art, and community provided a good place for my research. The projects I visited include:

  • Gasometer City, Vienna (former gasometers turned residential and commercial)
  • Rinderhalle, St. Marx, Vienna (former slaughterhouse, no definite reuse)
  • ARENA, Vienna (former slaughterhouse, now music venue)
  • WUK, Vienna (former locomotive factory, now multi-cultural arts centre)
  • Tabakfabrik, Linz (former Tobacco Factory with no definite reuse)
  • OK Kulturhaus, Linz (former school, now contemporary art centre)

A very gracious individual, the knowledgeable and well-respected Elke Krasny introduced me to each of the individuals and projects I visited in Austria. Elke is a theorist, curator and writer on Urbanism and Architecture and a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. I could not have had a better guide and was grateful she would offer her time and knowledge to a Canadian student she had never met.
